Matching Numbers: The Magic Incantation That Decides Veteran's Worth

Imagine buying a painting from an old master. If the canvas is original, but the frame was replaced in the 19th century, the value is high. But if you find that part of the canvas has been repainted by someone else 50 years later, the price falls down. It's similar with cars.

What does Matching Numbers mean?

In the strictest sense of the word, the term means that the key components of the car — primarily engine, transmission and chassis (VIN) — are the same ones with which the car left the production line.

In the course of 50 or 60 years of a car's life, anything can happen. The engine stalls and is replaced. The gearbox gets damaged during racing. If a different aggregate, albeit identical in type and period, is mounted in the car, the car loses its “historical integrity”. From the collector's point of view, it is no longer the original unique.

Why is this so important for an investment?

The difference in market price between a car with “Matching Numbers” and a car without them can amount to 30 to 50%.

  • Car with original numbers: It is considered a “Blue Chip” investment. Its history is transparent, its origin provable.
  • Car without original numbers: It can still be a wonderful machine for driving pleasure (so called. “driver's car”), but its investment ceiling is significantly lower.

How do we verify originality?

Before recommending the purchase of a car, we carry out detective work. We do not rely solely on the seller's claims.

  1. Factory Archives: We work with departments such as Porsche Classic chi Ferrari Classicoto get the original build sheets.
  2. Physical inspection: Our team checks the number stampings on the engine block and gearbox. We know whether the stampings are original from the factory or whether it is an attempted forgery (so-called restamping).

Our tip: If you're considering buying a veteran as an investment, never underestimate the car's “birth certificate.” It is the detail on which you will earn the most in the future.
